This course helps students develop the essential capability in effective citizenship, which has been defined by the Wesleyan faculty as:
“The ability to analyze and develop informed opinions on the political and social life of one's local community, one's country, and the global community, and to engage in constructive action if appropriate."
While this course is too large to meet the essential capability for writing, students are urged to participate in blogging as a way of developing ideas in their own voices and writing styles. Blogging is an interactive, ungraded format that helps us speak as citizens, even in a class where we are being graded. In addition to commenting, students are strongly encouraged to meet with writing tutors Ryan McLaren and Stephanie Savas to develop posts for the entire class.
Students may post anonymously, are urged to speak their minds, to argue, and to stand up for themselves and what they believe. Please do so, however, in a civil manner that respects the opinions of others, especially when you disagree. Uncivil comments will be deleted.
