An Interesting Find

Bumping around the NY Times site I came across an OP-ED piece by Bob Herbert quite pertinent to our recent discussions. The article focuses on Ronald Reagan's push for state's rights, and the racism therein. Read and argue away: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/13/opinion/13herbert.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Here's a follow up article:

"Republicans and Race"
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/19/opinion/19krugman.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

It discusses how Republicans (particularly Reagan) have used racial allusions as a means of gaining white votes, and I think partially explains the link between modern Republicanism and conservativism, and the reason the Republican Party is overwhelmingly white.
Additionally, this op-ed has an optimistic viewpoint regarding racism in this country, which is refreshing.
